Location Lat 6° 39' 35" S Long 147° 50' 19" E Cape Cretin is located to the south of Finschafen on the north coast of New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Morobe District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History Cape Cretin was developed into an Allied staging area used by the U.S. Navy (USN) and U.S. Army. Used as a staging area by 45,110 soldiers from the U.S. Army, 1st Cavalry Division were to concentrate at Oro Bay and Cape Cretin before embarking for the amphibious landing in the Admiralty Islands. The Australian Army 6th Division designated as a reserve force. During March 1944, Cape Cretin was used as a staging area by the 41st Infantry Division (41st ID). In July 1944 Australian Landing Ship Infantry HMAS Kanimbla went ashore at Cape Cretin and was refloated with help from HMAS Bundaberg (J231) and HMAS Whyalla (J153) helped refloat Australian Landing Ship Infantry HMAS Kanimbla that went ashore at Cape Cretin.
