Location Mount Tambu is located inland from Tambu Bay on the north coast of New Guinea. Also known as simply Mt. Tambu. To the northwest is Komiatum. To the north is Scout Ridge and Roosevelt Ridge (RR) and beyond Salamaua. To the south is Bitoi Ridge and the Bitoi River and beyond Mubo. Prewar located in the Morobe District in Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Salamaua Rural LLG, Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During the middle of 1943, the Japanese Army developed defensive positions on Mount Tambu and Komiatum Ridge to defend the approaches to Salamaua. By August 16, 1943 the Australian Army 2/6th Infantry captured Komiatum Ridge with two companies and cut Japanese supply routes between Komiatum and Davidson Ridge. By August 19, 1943 the Japanese abandoned their defensive positions on Mount Tambu withdrew to last ditch defensive position at Salamaua.
