Location
The Dampier Strait connects the Bismarck Sea to the north with the Solomon Sea to the south. Named after British explorer William Dampier who navigated the strait in 1700 aboard his ship HMS Roebuck. Borders Umboi Island (Rooke, Rook) to the west
and West New Britain to the east. Borders the Vitiaz Strait. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in West New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Note, there is another Dampier Strait (Augusta's Strait) in West Papua Province in Indonesia.
