Wartime History
During early September 1942, "Kanga Force" withdrew from the Bulolo Valley southward via Kaisenik, Blakes Camp to Winima and Kudjeru at the start of the Bulldog Track. The Australian retreat was dubbed the "Bulldog Stakes" or "Bulldog Derby" to describe their poorly coordinated race to evacuate fearing a Japanese advance to Wau. For five weeks, Australian troops were at Winima and Kudjeru until they returned to Wau.
