Location Lat 7° 24' 54S Long 146° 46' 48E Winima is located at an elevation of 5,029' / 1,532m. Also known as "Winima 1" or "Winima No. 1". To the south is Kudjeru and to the north is Wau. Today located in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar A walking trail connected to the north to Winima and onward onto a road that connected to Wau. Prewar A walking trail spanned southward to Kudjeru and the start of the Bulldog Track and to the north connected to a road that connected to Wau. Wartime History During early September 1942, "Kanga Force" withdrew from the Bulolo Valley southward via Kaisenik, Blakes Camp to Winima and Kudjeru at the start of the Bulldog Track. The Australian retreat was dubbed the "Bulldog Stakes" or "Bulldog Derby" to describe their poorly coordinated race to evacuate fearing a Japanese advance to Wau. For five weeks, Australian troops were at Winima and Kudjeru until they returned to Wau.
