Location Lat 4° 8' 51S Long 144° 50' 19E Awar is located at the western edge of Hansa Bay on the north coast of New Guinea. Also known as Awar Point or Condor Point. Today located in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). To the east is Stephan Strait and Manam Island. Prewar This location was developed into Awar Plantation planted with coconut palms harvesting copra. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese Army who constructed Awar Airfield (Hansa North, Condor Point) at this location. At Awar Point (Condor Point) a jetty was built to unload barges and ships. Inland from the beach was a supply and bivouac area and heavy anti-aircraft gun emplacements. Awar Point was targeted by Allied aircraft between August 1943 until May 1944. On March 11, 1944 gunners from Awar Point hit B-24D "Heaven Can Wait" 42-41216 causing it to crash into Hansa Bay.
