Wartime History
During the night of December 18, 1942 the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) occupied Madang then advanced northward to this location. Mililat was occupied by the Japanese until late April 1944. As they withdrew, they abandoned an intact Type 98 Ro-Ke prime mover.

On April 25, 1944 the Australian Army 5th Division, 30th Battalion liberated the Mililat area while advancing northward. Afterwards, the former plantation house was used by Major General A. H. Ramsay, Commanding Officer (C.O.) 5th Division and used as his headquarters.

By October 1944 the 4th Armoured Brigade, 2/4 Armoured Regiment established their headquarters and camp area at this location. They modified an M3 Armoured Recovery Vehicle (Grant ARV II) and repaired the abandoned Type 98 Ro-Ke prime mover. They also established a tank park and tank course with at least three tracks: track no. 1, track no. 2 and track no. 3. This course was used by various tank types including Matilda II, Churchill Mark IV, Churchill Mark V, Churchill Mark VII and M4 Sherman.

On October 15, 1944 an advanced party from Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No. 4 Central Reserve arrived from Milne Bay to Mililat and established a munitions dump. They used the prewar planter's house became their officers' mess and quarters.
