Australian Army 4th Armoured Brigade 2/4th Armour Regiment ![]() Australian Army September 12, 1944 ![]() Australian Army October 1944 |
Tank History Built in the United States by either Detroit Tank Arsenal, Baldwin Locomotive Co or American Locomotive Company as a M3 Medium Tank sometime between August 1941 to December 1942. One of 777 surplus from British ordered M3 medium tanks including three variants: Lee (M3), Grant I (M3 and M3A2) and Grant II (M3A3 and M3A5) shipped to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the Australian Army to the Armoured Corps. Assigned to the 3rd Armoured Division until disbanded in October 1943 then allocated to the 4th Armoured Brigade, 2/4 Armour Regiment. During 1944, converted into a Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV) / Grant ARV II with a recovery attachment added to the rear with a row of teeth, likely as an anchor for recovery. During August 1944, shipped to Madang in New Guinea. On September 12, 1944 photographed at the 2/4 Armour Regiment workshop area at Mililat being worked on by electrical and mechanical engineers including Sergeant W. E. Drury, VX69134, Craftsman R. W. Green. VX60304 and Craftsman G. J. Fletcher, VX70444. The rear corner had stenciled "94" and "TARE 26 Tons". During October 1944 photographed assisting in the recovery of a Churchill VII tank with the recovery attachment extended with tow cables while attached at 4th Armoured Brigade Headquarters at Mililat. Likely, this recovery was October 12, 1944 during tank training exercises. During June 1945 likely abandoned when the regiment departed for Bougainville. Ultimate fate unknown. Possibly, M3 Medium Tank at Alexishafen is the same Armoured Recovery Vehicle (Grant ARV II).
