Location East Sepik Province (ESP) is located on the north coast of New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Borders Madang Province to the east, Enga Province to the south, West Sepik Province (Sandaun Province) to the west and the Bismarck Sea to the north. Wartime History On December 18, 1942 Wewak was occupied by the Japanese Army and developed into a base area. On April 22, 1944 American forces bypassed Wewak with amphibious landings further west at Aitape and Hollandia (Jayapura). Afterwards, the Japanese were cut off from supplies or any hope of reinforcement or escape. During 1945, Australian Army troops landed at Dagua and advanced eastward to occupy Wewak by May 1945. Further inland, the Japanese continuted to to fight until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
