Location Mission Point is located on the north coast of New Guinea. To the north is Wewak Harbor and beyond the Bismarck Sea. To the west is Kreer, Wirui and beyond Wewak Town (Wewak Point). To the east is Cape Boram. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today, located in the Wewak District of East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar Mission Point was used as a wharf and dock for ships unloading at Wewak. Also known simply as "The Wharf". Wartime History On December 18, 1942 occupied by the Japanese Army when four ships landed unopposed between 8pm and 2am and unloaded about 2,000 personnel and supplies onto the beach at Wewak to Wirui. During May 1945, liberated by the Australian Army and discovered in a Japanese cemetery on Mission Point five graves with the names and dates: #1 Tierney, #2 Feehan, #3 Power, #4 Name Illegible, #5 Sheroden. All had a date of death listed as "Nov 1942" The date of death was deemed to be in error. After being exhumed and transported to the American Cemetery at Finschafen. Two of these graves (graves #3 and #5) proved to be Elliot and Bower crew aboard B-24D "Miss Carriage" 41-24207. Today Site of the present day wharf that services boats arriving and departing from the Wewak area.
