Location Lat 3° 37' 60S Long 143° 3' 0E Maprik is located at the center of East Sepik Province in New Guinea. Also known as Kominibus. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today, located in the Maprik District of East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar The Maprik Government Mission was established at Maprik. Wartime History During late March 1945 after the Australian Army landing at Dagua, the Japanese Army began to withdraw inland to Maprik and Lt. General Hatazo Adachi established his headquarters at Maprik. In April 1945 his headquarters withdrew to Kiarivu until the end of the Pacific War. During April 1945, the Australian Army began to encircle Maprik from the north, east and west. On April 22, 1945, they occupied Maprik with little opposition and immediately began building Hayfield Airfield and the New Maprik Road "Big Road". Advancing, the 17th Brigade continued driving to the east and south meeting determined resistance. The 2/7th Battalion, relieved by 2/5th Battalion towards the end of May 1945, advanced eastwards from Maprik towards Yamil and Ulupu, while 2/6th moved on Yamil from the north. Fighting continued into late June into the middle of July 1945 in the Yamil No. 1 area. On September 12, 1945 ater surrendering at Kiarivu, Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) 18th Army commander Lt. General Hatazo Adachi and his staff were escorted to Maprik then flown from Hayfield Airfield to Wewak Airfield for the official surrender ceremony at Cape Wom. Today Maprik is the capital of Maprik District along the Sepik Highway.
