Location Lat 3° 37' 60S Long 143° 3' 0E Yamil village is located at an elevation of 1,669' / 508m in the southern foothills of the Prince Alexander Range in New Guinea. Also known as Yamil No. 1 or Yamil 1. Yamil is a cluster of four villages including Yamil No. 2 (Yamil 2), Yamil No. 3 (Yamil 3) and Yamil No. 4 (Yamil 4). Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today, located in the Maprik District of East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese. During late May 1945, the Australian Army 2/5th Battalion advanced from Maprik eastward towards Yamil. During late June 1945 the 2/6th advancing from the north against Yamil until the area was occupied by the middle of July 1945. Yamil Airfield (Yamil Emergency Landing Ground) During the middle of June 1945, the Australian Army built an emergency landing ground at this location.
