Location Yamil Airfield (Yamil Emergency Landing Ground, Yamil ELG) was located at Yamil (Yamil No. 1) in the southern foothills of the Prince Alexander Range in New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Maprik District, East Sepik Province (ESP) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Construction The Australian Army built a single runway with a length of 400 yards using 400 local laborers to help level the ground. Wartime History Yamil Airfield was used by the Australian Army built as an emergency landing ground for light aircraft. On July 10, 1945 the first aircraft to land was a DH82 Tiger Moth transporting medical supplies including penicillin and blood serum for wounded. Contribute
