WEDNESDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER 1945
Singapore: Japan officially surrenders South East Asia in a ceremony at the Municipal Building in Singapore followed by a celebration in the Padang with a victory parade. Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander of South East Asia Command, accepts the formal surrender of the Japanese forces in the region from General SeishirÅ Itagaki on behalf of Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi. Afterwards, a British military administration, using surrendered Japanese troops as security forces, was formed to govern Singapore until March 1946.
IJA: 18th Army commander Lt General Hatazo Adachi accompanied by his staff depart Kiarivu for Maprik.
USN: Lost is PBM-5 Mariner 84617 pilot Lt(jg) Herman G. Sale (KIA) collided with a J2F Duck while climbing and crashed into Chimu Bay (Chimu Wan).
USN: The 4th Marines, rein, (less one battalion) was returned to the U.S. to join the 2d Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. North Carolina.
