Location
Lat 1° 17' 35N Long 103° 51' 21E  Singapore Island is located to the south of the Malaya Peninsula. Borders Singapore Harbor, Keppel Harbor and and Sentosa Island. To the southeast is the Singapore Strait. To the north is the Johore Strait and Johore Causeway to the mainland. To the northeast is Ubin Island. Prewar and durign the Pacific War part of the British colony known as the Malayan States or Malaya. During 1959 became self-governing and in 1963-1965 part of the Federation of Malaya. On August 9, 1965 Singapore became an independent country, officially the Republic of Singapore (Republik Singapura).

Wartime History
On February 8, 1942 at 8:30pm the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) 25th Army under the command of General Tomoyuki Yamashita including the 5th Division and 18th Division land on the northern shore of Singapore. The Japanese were able to land roughly 4,000 with available boats and barges and by the end of the night had landed roughly 13,000 soldiers that quickly overwhelm the Australian Army 22nd Brigade with roughly 3,000 soldiers defending the area. The British naval guns protecting Singapore Harbor were unable to oppose the landing. On February 15, 1942 the British officially surrendered Singapore to the Japanese.

During the Pacific War, Singapore was used by the Japanese as a staging base and Singapore Harbor was used by Japanese warships and transports.

During 1943 but the Australian Army Z Forces attacked Singapore Harbor during September 1943 and during October 1943 during "Operation Jaywick". By late 1944 Singapore was within range of of B-29 Superfortress heavy bombers and was targeted until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945.

Allied missions against Singapore
September 24, 1943–August 13, 1945

On September 5, 1945 at 11:30am HMS Sussex (96) entered Singapore Harbor with the flag of the Rear-Admiral Cedric Holland flying as part of "Operation Tiderace". After anchoring, General Seishirō Itagaki, commander of the Japanese garrison at Singapore was brought aboard to sign the instrument of surrender for the forces under his command.

Changi
Located at the eastern tip of Singapore Island.

Seletar Naval Base
Located on the northeast coast of Singapore Island bordering the Johore Striat.

Ford Factory (Ford Works Building, Old Ford Motor Factory)
Built during 1941 by the Ford Motor Company of Malaya, British Army surrender site used until 1980.

Kalang (Kallang)
Located at the center of Singapore near the southern coast.

Kranji War Cemetery
Commonwealth War Cemetery, with 24,313 identified and the Singapore Memorial with over 24,000 missing.

Sentosa Island (Fort Siloso)
Fort Siloso was built in 1880s by the British to protect the western approaches to Singapore Harbor. Today the fort is a museum documenting the Battle for Singapore during 1942.

Changi Airfield (RAF Changi, Changi Air Base)  located near Changi prewar airfield
Kallang Airfield  built prewar with a single runway and seaplane operating area on the southern coast of Singapore.
Seletar Airfield
  built prewar and Singapore's first airport between 1930-1937 and during the Pacific War.
Seletar Seaplane Base  prewar seaplane operating area off Seletar Airfield on the north coast of Singapore
Sembawang Airfield  built prewar with two intersecting runways occupied by the Japanese until the end of the war.
Singapore Changi Airport (Changi Airport, Paya Lebar Airport, Paya Lebar)  present day airport.
Sungei Buloh Airfield  built prewar with a single runway, located on the southern coast of Singapore.
Tengah Airfield  built prewar with a single runway on the southern coast of Singapore.
