Safia Airfield (Sapia) Oro Province Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Location
Lat 9° 35.70S Long 148 38.34E  Safia Airfield is located at Safia. Also known as "Sapia Airfield".

Construction
Built postwar to support the Safia cattle ranch.

During the late 1950, PATAIR had regularly scheduled flights by DC-3 from Jacksons Airport with cargo for Safia Airfield, then returned to Port Moresby with fresh beef from Safia cattle ranch. The air freight cost resulted in the beef being very expensive and Safia beef export became cost prohibitive.

Today
Safia Airport is a single runway measuring 1,080m at an elevation of 480' oriented 29/11. Airport code: SFA. Elevation 480'. Unclear if still in use today.

Richard Leahy adds:
"I am not even sure that the Safia airstrip is still in service. I landed there about ten years ago [2002] on a charter and Safia Airstrip was a hell of a mess."
