| Location Suribachi Airfield was located at Suribachi on the southern coast of Paramushir Island (Paramushiro, Paramushiru) in the Kurile Islands (Kuril). Also known as Suribachi Bay Airfield. Borders Tategami Point Suribachi and Suribachi Bay to the west and Tatsukami-saki and Tomae Bay to the east. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of Japan. During August 1945 captured by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. Construction Built by the Japanese with two runways. Wartime History Used by the Japanese as a military airfield. Attacked by American bombers starting in June 1944 until August 1945. On August 18, 1945 Soviet troops made an amphibious landing on Paramushir Island and fighting lasted until August 23, 1945 when the remaining Japanese forces surrendered. American missions against Suribachi Airfield June 19, 1944–August 12, 1945 Postwar Suribachi Airfield was still in use by the Soviet Union until at least 1954.
