Location Suribachi is located on the southern coast of Paramushir Island (Paramushiro, Paramushiru). Borders Tategami Point Suribachi and Suribachi Bay to the west and Tatsukami-saki and Tomae Bay to the east. Prewar and during World War II, Paramushir Island was part of Japan. Postwar, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. Wartime History During the Pacific War, the Japanese built an Suribachi Airfield to the east. Attacked by American bombers starting in the middle of June 1944 until early August 1945. Occupied by the Japanese until the end of the Pacific War. During late August 1945 occupied by Soviet forces.
