Location Kiska Harbor Submarine Base was located at Kiska Harbor on eastern Kiska Island in the Rat Island Group (Rat Islands) in the Aleutian Island Chain (Aleutian Islands). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of Alaska. Today part of Alaska in the United States. Construction On June 6, 1942 five hundred Japanese Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF) from the No. 3 Special Landing Party landed at Kiska Harbor. The Japanese Navy developed the area around Kiska Harbor into a base area known as "Main Camp". A submarine base was established with a ramp and submarine pens for Type A midget submarines. Nearby was Kiska Harbor Seaplane Base. Wartime History During early 1943 established by the Japanese as a forward submarine base to support Type A Midget submarine operations. On February 26, 1943 a Type A midget submarine plus torpedoes are delivered by Japanese submarine I-169. The base was abandoned when the Japanese withdrew from Kiska on July 23, 1943. American missions against Kiska June 8, 1942–August 17, 1943 During August 1943, American forces occupied the area and captured abandoned equipment and wreckage in the base area including the wreckage of three Type A Midget Submarines. Type A Midget Submarine (No. 1) One of three midget subs damaged by demolition charges, remains on land Type A Midget Submarine (No. 2) One of three midget subs damaged by demolition charges, remains in the surf line Type A Midget Submarine (No. 3) One of three midget subs damaged by demolition charges, no trace today Today Abandoned since the war.
