Location NAS Puunene is located roughly 3 miles south of Puunene on Maui. Also known as Puunene Airport. Prewar part of the Territory of Hawaii. Today located in Maui County in the State of Hawaii in the United States. Construction In 1937, built as a civilian airport to replace a smaller landing ground at Maalaea. During 1939 Inter-Island Airways began using the airfield for passenger service. Wartime History In 1940, the U.S. Navy (USN) began using the airfield and became known as Naval Air Station Puunene (NAS Puunene) when elements of Utility Squadron 3 (VJ-3) arrived and used the airfield for tow target and drone operations. American units based at NAS Puunene VF-20 (Hellcats) NAS Kaneohe Bay June 22, 1944–August 2, 1944 NAS Barber's Point Postwar In 1947, released by the Navy to the Territory of Hawaii and became a civilian airport again until 1952 when NAS Kahului (Kahului Airport, Maui Airport) became the new civilian airport for the island. Afterwards, the abandoned runway was used by locals for drag racing and became known as Maui Drag Strip. Today The former Puunene Airfield is on the eastern side of Route 311.
