| Location Maui Island is the second largest Hawaiian Island in the Southeast Islands (Windward Islands). To the northwest is Molokai (Molokaʻi) and beyond is Oahu. To the west is Lanai (Lāna`i). To the southwest is Kahoolawe (Kahoʻolawe). To the southeast is Hawaii (Hawai'i). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of Hawaii (Hawaii Territory). Today located in Maui County in the State of Hawaii in the United States. Wartime History On December 15, 1941 before sunset, Japanese submarine I-75 surfaces and fires 16 shells at Kahului Harbor on Maui. Ashore, the Maui Pineapple Cannery is hit by two shells, causing damage estimated at $654.38. Kahului Located on the north coast of Maui includes NAS Kahului (Maui Airport, Kahului Airport).
