Location
Rockwell Field was located in the southeast corner of North Island off the Coronado peninsula at San Diego, Borders San Diego Bay.
Construction
North Island was an uninhabited sand flat. During 1912, the US Army Signal Corps established the Signal Corps Aviation School at this location, the first school to provide flight training for military pilots. During 1917, US Congress appropriated the land and two airfields on the island: Naval Air Station San Diego (North Island) and Rockwell Field. That same year, commissioned by the U.S. Navy (USN) as Naval Air Station San Diego (NAS San Diego).
During 1935, the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) moved to March Field. Afterwards, all of North Island was turned over to the U.S. Navy (USN), but it took three years to before all Army operations and personnel had departed.
