Location Lat 34° 0' 57N Long 118° 27' 5W Santa Monica Airfield is located at an elevation of 177' above sea level to the east of Santa Monica in Los Angeles County in California in the United States of America (USA). Prewar and during World War II known as Clover Field or Santa Monica Airfield. Today known as Santa Monica Airport or Santa Monica Municipal Airport. Construction Built prewar as Clover Field named after U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant Greayer "Grubby" Clover an aviator in World War I. Adjacent to the airfield was the headquarters of Douglas Aircraft Company building airliners and later military bombers and transports. Wartime History During World War II, the U.S. Army 40th Division Aviation, 115th Observation Squadron was based at Clover Field. The Douglas factory was hidden by a canvas above the buildings to prevent aerial observation that was painted by Hollywood artist with a rendition of houses and streets to appear to be a suburban area. Postwar In 1958, Douglas closed the factory due to space restrictions and moved the facility to Douglas Long Beach at Long Beach Airport. Today Still in use as Santa Monica Airport or Santa Monica Municipal Airport and is used as a civilian airport. The single runway is oriented 21/03 measures 4,973' x 150' surfaced with asphalt. Airport Codes: FAA: SMO IATA: SMO. Santa Monica Museum of Flying (Closed) New location of the museum, slated to open in late 2004. The Museum will place heavy emphasis on the history of the airport and the prominent role that the Douglas Aircraft Company played in the early development of commercial and military aviation.
