Location The Battle of Sunda Strait happened in the Sunda Strait (Soenda Strait) between Java and Sumatra in Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) between Allied warships of the American-British-Dutch-Australian (ABDA) against the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from February 28, 1942 until March 1, 1942. Wartime History The Battle of Sunda Strait was between Allied cruisers: USS Houston CA-30 and HMAS Perth that survived the Battle of the Java Sea and were then trying to escape Java via the Strait (Soenda Strait). The two cruisers ran into the Japanese invasion force assaulting Jakarta. The Allied cruisers sank three Japanese transports before they were both sunk. Unknown one for most of the war, many of the crews of the ships sunk were taken prisoner and initially. Several years later, a Japanese transport with Australian survivors of the Perth was torpedoed, and the Australians rescued, shed light about what happened to the Perth and Houston, as no signals of their battle was transmitted before they were sunk. HMAS Perth (D29) Damaged February 28, 1942 at 11:5pm by torpedoes and sank March 1, 1942 at 12:25am USS Houston (CA-30) Sunk February 28, 1942 by gunfire and sunk March 1, 1942 when hit by a torpedo around 12:30am and sunk HNMS Evertsen (EV) Damaged February 28, 1942 and beached March 1, 1942 References NavWeapons - Battle of the Sunda Strait 28 February - 1 March 1942 (Order of Battle) Contribute
