RAAF: Lost is PBY-5 Catalina A24-43 (3 KIA, 3 POW/MIA, 2 rescued) dropping supplies to coastwatchers at Aita on Bougainville.
U.S. Army: General MacArthur issued his third plan for the seizure of the New Britain, New Guinea, and New Ireland area calling for mutually supporting advances in the South and Southwest Pacific toward Rabaul.
USN: Task Group 16.6 (TG 16.6) under the command of Rear Admiral Charles H. McMorris with three light cruisers and six destroyers conduct the second naval bombardment of Japanese installations on Attu targeting Chichagof Harbor and Holtz Bay.
