SOUTH PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Thirteenth Air Force) Lost on an escort mission is P-38G 43-2218 pilot 1st Lt. Gordon Whitaker, Jr. (MIA).

(Fifth Air Force): Lost is P-38 pilot McIntyre (KIA).

USN: USS Gato (SS-212) lands coast watchers and evacuates missionaries from Teop Island, Solomons Islands.

IJN: Japanese submarine I-180 fires two torpedoes that hit and sink SS Wollongbar roughly 55 miles ESE of Smokey Cape in Australia.
