Wollongbar prewar
Ship History
SS Wollongbar was an Australian merchant ship that operated off Australia with a crew of 37 including Master Captain Charles Benson. Also known as simply Wollongbar.

Wartime History
On April 29, 1943 while steaming roughly 55 miles ESE of Smokey Cape, spotted by Japanese submarine I-180 fired two torpedoes that both hit and the ship broke into two pieces with the bow and stern rising sharply then quickly sinking at roughly Lat 31-17S, Long 153-07E.

Shipwreck
During 2019, the shipwreck was discovered by fisherman roughly six miles off Crescent Head, north of Port Macquarie. On May 1, 2022 a memorial service with the five survivors was held at Port Macquarie with a wreath laying ceremony over the shipwreck.

Rescue
Five of 37 crew including Captain Mason survived the sinking and were later rescued by trawler X.L.C.R.
