MONDAY, 3 SEPTEMBER 1945
RAAF: Crashed is Beaufort A9-622 pilot W/O Cedric Ernest Hall (KIA) dropping surrender leaflets west of Wewak.
U.S. Army: General Tomoyuki Yamashita officially surrendered all Japanese forces in the Philippines during a ceremony in the U.S. Ambassador's Residence at Camp John Hay. In attendance are Lt. General Arthur Percival and Lt. General Jonathan M. Wainwright who both survived captivity as Prisoners Of War (POWs).
USMC: The last elements of the 4th Marines (less the 3d Battalion) embarked for the United States, and the 3d Battalion come under direct naval command.
Escort carrier USS Anzio (CVE-57) is damaged in collision with oiler Suamico (AO-49) while fueling off Okinawa.
Royal Navy: Royal Marines from the British East Indies Fleet occupy Penang Island.
