IJA May 1942
Location
Battery Crockett is located on Corregidor Island.

Construction
Built by the U.S. Army named Battery Crockett. Emplaced four 12" disappearing guns capable of firing in any direction. A crew of 30 men was required to service each gun. A well-trained crew could fire a round every 40 seconds.

Wartime History
On April 24, 1942 a Japanese 240mm howitzer shell fired from Cavite scored a direct hit on Battery Crockett and knocked out two guns.

On May 5, 1942 last of the four guns was still firing when the Japanese landed. Before the gun was captured, the crews removed breech block to render it useless. With the prospect of the guns being captured and repaired, Captain Herman Hauck put a link of chain in the recoil cylinder of one of Crockett operational 12" guns. If it were ever fired by the Japanese, it would self-destruct.
