Location Lat 53° 52' 25N Long 166° 32' 12W Unalaska is located on Unalaska Island in the Fox Island Group (Fox Islands) in the Aleutian Island Chain (Aleutian Islands) in Alaska in the United States. Borders Amaknak Island (Umaknak) and Dutch Harbor. Today, Unalaska is connected to Alaskan mainland by bridge. Wartime History During the war, Unalaska was developed into a base and staging area. On June 3-4, 1942 Japanese carrier aircraft attack Dutch Harbor. On the ground, there was only minor damage to Dutch Harbor facilities, and 63 total casualties including 35 killed. Fort Mears Naval Base Located along Dutch Harbor Today The population of the City of Unalaska is about 4,300. The population triples between August and May due to the arrival of commercial fisherman. Wartime ruins can be found on this small island, as well as the oldest Russian Orthodox Church in North America and the most breathtaking sea life. One of the major attractions to this Aleutian Island are the many ruins still remaining from WWII. Regular tours will also take close to the island's other historical landmarks. The island of Unalaska is approximately 80 square miles in size with an elevation as high as 6,680 feet at the top of Makushin Volcano. WWII
