Location Lat 30° 17' 47S Long 153° 6' 49E Coffs Harbour is located at an elevation of 111' / 33m on the coast of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. To the south is Newcastle and beyond Nambucca Heads. To the north is Woolgoolga. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Japanese submarines operated off Coffs Harbour. On May 12, 1943 northeast of Coffs Harbour, Japanese submarine I-180 fired a torpedo that hit Australian merchant Ormiston (5,832 tons) but failed to explode and does no damage. Afterwards, escorted by HMAS Ballarat, HMAS Kybra and USS Henley (DD-391) to Coffs Harbour. On June 17, 1943 last signal from Japanese submarine I-178 roughly 65 miles southeast of Coffs Harbour.
