Location
Hammond Island is part of the Torres Strait Islands (Torres Straits) in the Torres Strait off the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland in Australia. The Aboriginal name for the island is Keriri. To the southeast is Thursday Island (Waiben).

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, the civilian population was evacuated to the Sisters of Mercy Convent to the mainland of Australia. Occupied by the Australian Army, the mission buildings were used. During 1942–1943 a radar station was established by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
