| Location Lat 6° 45' 0S Long 155° 35' 60E Aku is an inland in southwestern Bougainville Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Also known as "Aka". Prewar Aku plantation was planted with coconut palms harvesting copra. Wartime History During early 1942, the area was occupied by the Japanese until the end of the Pacific War. On April 18, 1943 a Japanese Army group under the command of Lt. Hamasuna at Aku observed smoke rising from the jungle. At first, they believed an American aircraft had crashed and Hamasuna led a patrol of twelve to locate the crash site. The next day, they reached the fatal crash and realized it was a Japanese bomber later identified as G4M1 Betty 2656 with Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.
