Location
Mount Bagana is an active volcano with an elevation of 5,741′ / 1,750m located along the center northwest to southeast axis of Bougainville Island in Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Also known as Mt. Bagana. This volcano is a dominating feature from Empress Augusta Bay and Torokina. Also known as "Mt. Bagana". During the Pacific War, some sources incorrectly spelled it "Mount Bagano". This is one of three major volcanoes including: Mount Balbi, Mount Takuan and Mount Bagana. To the northeast is Mount Billy Mitchell (Billy Mitchell Lake).
Wartime History
During the Pacific War, Mount Bagana was visible from western Bougainville including Empress Augusta Bay, Torokina and Piva areas. Often, the peak would emit a plume of ash forming a cloud. As one of the tallest peaks in the area, it was the most promenent feature in the area and used as a reference for navigation.
