Location
Lat 6° 5'23.60"S Long 155°13'26.26”E  Mount Billy Mitchell is an extinct pyroclastic shield volcano with an elevation of 1,544m / 5,066' at the center of Bougainville Island in Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). To the southwest is Mount Bagana (Mt. Bagana).

Below the summit edge is a crater lake lake an elevation of 1,067m is Billy Mitchell Lake. The lake is roughly oval in shape with a diameter of roughly 2km and a small island at the southeast corner. The forest extends to the edge of the lake. Known in the local language as "Eruovi" which means place where the waters boiled up and overflowed and is believed to be a place where the Rotokas ancestors dwell.

Wartime History
By 1944, this crater lake became known as "Billy Mitchell Crater Lake" on Allied maps. Also known as simply "Mitchell Lake" or "B-25 Lake". It is unclear if this name was due to an aircraft crashed into or near this lake or if it was simply named for U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) General William "Billy" Mitchell.

AOM2c John B. Kepchia from VT-305 recalls in M.I.A. Over Rabaul South Pacific:
"There was the wreckage of a B-25 Mitchell on Mount Bagana [sic] on Bougainville, One wing was halfway in a lake, roughly halfway up on the side of mountain."

This lake is also mentioned in the novel Tales of the South Pacific in the story of an Avenger hack flown to Piva North Airfield (Piva Uncle) in search of liquor.
