Location
Lat 20°09′00″N Long 92°54′00″E Akyab Island is located on the western
coast of Burma. Borders the Bay of Bingal and is located 90 miles south of
the border with India. Today, known as Sittwe Island in the Sittwe District in Rakhine State in Burma (Myanmar).
Wartime History
During December 1942, the British Army
under
the command of Major General
W. L.
Lloyd
launched
an invasion of Akyab Island. Meeting heavy resistance from
entrenched Japanese in bunkers in the Mayu Hills, halting the invasion. Lloyd
was replaced by Major General Cyril Lomax. During February 1943, the Japanese counter-attacks,
and by March 1943 the British fully withdrew.
