| Location Hankow (Hankou) is located on the northwest bank of the Yangtze River in Hubei Province in China. Also spelled Hankou. To the south is Hanyang 漢陽 on the west bank of the Yangtze River. On the southeast bank of the Yangtze River is Wuchang opposite the mouth of the Han River. Prewar, Hankow was an industrial town and the Pinghan railroad connected Hankow to Peking (Beijing). Wartime History In December 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Nationalist government moved the Hankow when the Japanese occupied Nanjing. In October 1938, the government withdrew further inland. On October 25, 1938 the Japanese Army begins to occupy Hankow over the next three days. Hankow was occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War and used as a logistic base until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
