Location Lat 26° 53' 17N Long 112° 36' 54E Hengyang is located at an elevation of 206' / 62m above sea level in Hunan Province in south central China. Prewar In 1929 Hengyang Airfield was built at Hengyang. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Hengyang was part of the Hengyang-Kweilin line of Allied control in south central China. Japanese missions against Hengyang July 2, 1942–May 30, 1944 During July 1945 to early August 1945 during the Defense of Hengyang (Battle of Hengyang) the Japanese Army battled Chinese troops around Hengyang. On August 8, 1945, the city of Hengyang and Hengyang Airfield were surrendered to the Japanese. Afterwards, both were the target of American bombing and strafing missions.
