Location Penrhyn Island is located in Penryn Atoll in the Cook Islands. Also known as Tongareva, Mangarongaro, Hararanga or Te Pitaka. Wartime History During the Pacific War, the U.S. code name for Penrhyn was "Ostler". During July 1942, the first American aircraft to arrive in Penrhyn Atoll was a PBY Catalina. On November 8, 1942 the first American troops arrived and established a camp named Camp Durant or Point Durant Camp and began construction of Penrhyn Airfield. Occupied by American forces for the duration of World War II. The last American forces departed Penrhyn Island on September 30, 1946.
