    Mogmog Island Yap State Federated States of Micronesia
Location
Mogmog Island located on the northern edge of Ulithi Atoll. Borders Ulithi Lagoon (Urushi Lagoon) to the south. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the western Caroline Islands. Allied code name "Litharge". During the American occupation during late 1944 until the end of the Pacific War known as "Recreation Island". Today located in in Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Micronesian people lived on Mogmog Island.

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, Occupied by the Japanese until abandoned by September 1944. During 1944, U.S. Navy (USN) carrier aircraft conducted combat missions and photo intelligence against Ulithi.

On September 20, 1944 occupied by U.S. Army 81st Infantry Division without opposition. Mogmog Island was selected to become recreation island for U.S. personnel.

On October 10, 1944 the U.S. Navy (USN) 88th Construction Battalion (88th CB) "Seabees" including C Company and D Company plus half of the headquarters company arrived on Mogmog and established a camp area. Their first task was to prepare the island for construction by clearing vegetation, filling swampy areas with coral and spraying to eliminate mosquitoes and insects.

On October 15, 1944 construction of recreational facilities began including sports fields, a band stand, beverage storage and chapel. A large 1,200-seat theatre with a 25' x 40' stage with a Quonset hut roof was built in 20 days and opened December 20, 1944. By January 1945, Mogmog Island recreation area was completed and able to accommodate 8,000 enlisted men and 1,000 officers daily.

Between December 12, 1944 until completed on January 27, 1945 the Seabees also built Mogmog Airfield for use by light aircraft and inter island flights. To the south of the island was a seaplane operating area surrounded by anchorage berths.
