Location Puluwat Atoll (Polowat Atoll) is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Includes Puluwat Island (Polowat), Alet Island (Alei), Sau Island, Elangelab Island and To Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Caroline Islands. Today located in the Polowat Municipality, Chuuk State (Truk) in the Federated States of Micronesia. Prewar After World War I, occupied by the Japanese and developed as part of their South Seas colonies. Wartime History On January 26, 1943 a PB4Y-1 Liberator from Marine Photographic Squadron 154 (VMD-154) photographs Puluwat Atoll, as the first U.S. plane to enter the Truk area.
