Location Sorlen Island is located at the northern edge of Ulithi Atoll in Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia. Borders Ulithi Lagoon (Urushi Lagoon) to the south. To the northwest is Mogmog Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the western Caroline Islands. Also known as Sorlen Islet. American code name "Keenset". Today located in in Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia. Wartime History On September 20, 1944, occupied by American forces without opposition. Afterwards, Sorlen Island was selected for development into a recreation area for U.S. personnel. Construction involved grading the entire island and covering it with quonset huts for storage, shops, mess halls, offices, and living quarters, roads, supply dumps, and facilities to supply water and electricity. In 19 days, a movie theater capable of seating 1,600 was constructed on the island. Also, the construction of facilities for a standard landing craft unit on Sorlen was another major project. This development involved grading the entire island and covering it with quonset huts for storage, shops, mess halls, offices, and living quarters, and building roads, supply dumps, and necessary facilities to supply water and electricity to all parts of the island. Eleven distillation units, drawing water from the sea, and nine 5,000-gallon storage tanks were set up to provide drinking water. A hospital, constructed between November 24, 1944, and January 17, 1945, included quonset huts and supplementary facilities to house and operate a 100-bed unit.
