Location The Aru Island Group (Aru Islands) are located to the southwest of western New Guinea. Also known as Aroe Island Group (Aroe Islands). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today part of Maluku Province (Provinsi Maluku) in Indonesia. Wartime History On July 27, 1942 during Operation "T", the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Kouichiro 24th Special Base Force under the command of Rear Admiral Hatakeyama Kouichiro lands in the Aru Islands without resistance. The Japanese occupy the Aru Islands until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. Wamar Island Wamar island is located at the west of the Aru Islands (Aroe) with Dobo. Borders Wokam Island to the east. Wokam Island Wokim Island is a large island in the center of the Aru Islands (Aroe). Borders Wamar Island to the west and Kobroor Island to the south. Tarangan Island Tarangan Island is located in the southwest corner of the Aru Islands (Aroe). Borders Koba Island to the northeast and Maikoor Island to the north. Maikoor Island (Maikor) Maikoor Island is located in the west of the Aru Islands (Aroe). Borders Kobroor Island to the east and Koba Island to the southeast and Tarangan Island to the south.
