Location Lat 7° 15' 0S Long 112° 45' 0E Surabaja is located on the north coast of Java. Wartime spelling Surabaya or Sourabaya. Borders Surabaja Harbor (Surabaya Harbor) and beyond the Soerabaja Strait. To the northeast is Madura Island. Allied wartime spelling: Surabaya. Also spelled: Sourabaya, Surabaja, Soerabaja, Surabaia, Soerabaya, Suroboyo, Suroboyo, Kutha , Kota Surabaya, Surabajo, Kutha Surabaya, Kota Surabaya or Surabajo. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Surabaja is the provincial capital of East Java Province (Propinsi Jawa Timur) in Indonesia. Wartime History On February 3, 1942 Surabaja was targeted by Japanese bombers and fighters and west of the city two Zeros shoot down B-18 Bolo 36-338 pilot Lt Col. Austin A. Straubel (WIA, DOW). On February 28, 1942, the remnants of the Allied forces on Java sheltered in Surabaya before trying to escape to Australia or were stuck on Java. On March 1, 1942, the Japanese eastern landing force landed 100 miles west of Soerabaja, while the Japanese western landing force landed to the northwest coast near Batavia (Djogkarta, Jakarta). Occupied by the Japanese until the end of the Pacific War. Starting in late July 1943 attacked by Allied bombers and later fighters and carrier aircraft until early August 1945. American missions against Soerabaja July 22, 1943–August 7, 1945 Surabaja Airfield (Surabaya, Soerabaja) Prewar airfield used by the Allies in the early months of the war, used by JAAF until the end of the Pacific War. Morokrembangan Seaplane Base Located at Morokrembangan near Soerabaja, prewar Dutch seaplane base. Soerabaja Naval Base Located in Soerabaja Harbor. Prewar Dutch Naval Base. Used by US Navy Patrol Wing 10 (PatWing 10) during December 1941. Occupied by the Japanese and used as naval base for the remainder of the Pacific War. During August 1943, a German U-Boat satellite station was established here, with their main base at Penang. Netherlands Field of Honour at Sourabaya Cemetery with Dutch war dead.
