| Location Lat 1° 58' 17S Long 138° 57' 4E Arara is located between the Tor River to the northwest and Toem is to the southeast. To the northwest is Maffin Bay. Prewar and during World War II, located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Sarmi Regency of Papua Province in Indonesia. Wartime History On May 15, 1944, the U.S. Army 41st Division, 163rd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) made an amphibious landing at Arara unopposed to establish the Maffin Bay perimeter. Later the 155th Infantry Regiments and 167th Infantry Regiments defended the area to protect nearby Wakde Airfield on Wakde Island. Between May 18 - 31, 1944 the Japanese Army 223rd Infantry Infantry Regiment "Yoshino Force" attacked the American flank at Arare advancing south through the jungle.
