Location Lat 1° 15' S Long 136° 22' E Mios Woendi Island is a small coral atoll, located ten miles south of Biak, part of the Schouten Island Group. The area is a flat sandy area with a deep water lagoon. Also known as simply Woendi or Woendi Island. Today located in Biak Numfor Regency in Papua Province in Indonesia. Wartime History On June 1, 1944 U.S. Nay (USN) personnel and engineers from Task Force Hurricane performed a reconnaissance of Mios Woendi, Aoeki, and Owi. On June 2, 1944 the U.S. Army 41st Infantry Division, 163rd Infantry Regiment, Company A secured Owi and Mios Woendi without opposition. On June 8, 1944 Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) "SeeBees" began construction of Mios Woendi PT Boat Base to replace Hollandia as the most forward base for PT Boat operations.
