Location Lat 1° 15' 0S Long 136° 11' 60E Owi Island is part of the Schouten Island Group. To the north is Biak Island and to the south is Yapen Island (Japen). Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Biak Numfor Regency in Papua Province in Indonesia. Wartime History During 1942, occupied by the Japanese. On June 1, 1944 a reconnaissance was performed of Mios Woendi, Aoeki, and Owi Islands by U.S. Navy (USN) personnel and engineers from Task Force Hurricane. On June 2, 1944 the U.S. Army 41st Infantry Division, 163rd Infantry Regiment, Company A secured Owi and Mios Woendi. On June 3, 1944 U.S. Army engineers, anti-aircraft, radar and 155mm howitzers to provide fire support against southern Biak were landed on the island. The engineers built Owi Airfield in three weeks and was used between June 1944 until late November 1944 Owi Airfield (Owi Drome) Built by the U.S. Army and used as a fighter and bomber base in from middle to late 1944.
