Location
Lat 26°20′28″N Long 126°48′18″E Kume Island (Kume Jima, Kume Shima, Kumijima) 久米島 is located in the Kume Island Group (Kume Islands) to the southwest of Okinawa Island in Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan. The Kume Islands include Kume Island (Kume Jima), Ōjima Island (Ōjima Jima), Ōhajima Island (Ōhajima Jima), Torishima (Torishima Jima, Tori Shima) and Iōtorishima Island (Iōtorishima Jima).
Wartime History
On June 26, 1945 U.S. Marine Corps Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion lands on Kume Island without opposition and conducts patrols. On June 29, 1945 Kume Island is declared secure.
