Location Lat 33° 10' 0N Long 129° 43' 0E Sasebo is located in Nagasaki Prefecture on the western coast of Kyūshū Island in Japan. Borders Sasebo Harbor. Wartime History The Sasebo Naval Arsenal (Sasebo Navy Yard) was an important shipbuilding yard and Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) anchorage and base. During 1945 attacked by U.S. aircraft until the end of the Pacific War. American missions against Sasebo July 7, 1945–August 10, 1945 Postwar In early September 1945 the U.S. Marine Coprs (USMC), 5th Marine Division occupies Sasebo. During the U.S. occupation of Japan, Sasebo Navy base was used by the U.S. Navy (USN) as a naval base and anchorage. On July 1, 1946 6th Marines Headquarters and Service Company and Weapons Company depart Sasebo. During the Korean War, Sasebo was an important base and is still used by the U.S. Navy today.
