Location Kyūshū Island is located in southern Japan and divided into seven prefectures. Kyūshū is located southwest of Honshū. Also spelled Kyushu in English sources. Wartime History On May 25, 1945 the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff approve the directive for "Operation Olympic" the planned U.S. operation scheduled to commence on November 1, 1945 at three locations on southern Kyūshū Island at Miyazaki, Ariake, and Kushikino with a diversionary landing on southern Shikoku Island. Kyūshū Island Prefectures Fukuoka Prefecture located on the northern center of Kyushu, includes Fukuoka. Nagasaki Prefecture located to on the northwest of Kyushu, includes Nagasaki and Sasebo. Kagoshima Prefecture located on the south of Kyushu, includes Kaseda, Kanoya, Kushira. Kumamoto Prefecture located on the west center Kyushu. Miyazaki Prefecture located on eastern of Kyushu. Ōita Prefecture located on the northeast corner of Kyushu. Saga Prefecture located on the western corner of Kyushu.
