Location Shikoku Island 四国 is located in the Shikoku Region of southern Japan. Also known as simply Shikoku meaning four provinces. Shikoku Island is 225 km long and between 50 and 150 km wide and is the smallest of the five main islands of Japan. Shikoku is divided into four prefectures: Ehime Prefecture, Kagawa Prefecture, Kōchi Prefecture and Tokushima Prefecture. To the north is Honshū. To the west is the Seto Inland Sea (Inland Sea) and beyond Kyūshū Island. Wartime History On May 25, 1945 the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff approve the directive for "Operation Olympic" the planned U.S. operation scheduled to commence on November 1, 1945 with a diversionary landing on southern Shikoku Island.
